Xiaomi YU7

Xiaomi YU7 BEIJING, May 19 – Chinese tech giant Xiaomi has officially confirmed the launch of its highly anticipated YU7 electric SUV on Thursday, May 23, marking a significant leap forward in its electric vehicle ambitions. The company will also introduce several other flagship innovations, including the Xring O1, a mobile processor developed in-house, and the new Xiaomi 15S Pro smartphone.

Xiaomi YU7: Xiaomi’s Answer to Tesla Model Y

According to industry analysts, the Xiaomi YU7 Electric SUV is being positioned as a direct competitor to Tesla’s Model Y—the best-selling electric SUV in China, the world’s largest EV market. This launch comes after Xiaomi surprised many by not showcasing the Xiaomi YU7 at last month’s Shanghai Auto Show, which had led to widespread speculation and anticipation among fans and auto enthusiasts.

Despite the momentum generated by its first EV, the SU7 electric sedan, Xiaomi faced a dip in orders following a fatal accident in March involving an SU7 model. Nevertheless, the company has consistently outsold Tesla’s Model 3 in monthly sales since December.

Innovation Beyond EVs: Xring O1 Mobile Chip

Xiaomi is not only disrupting the EV space—it is also making significant strides in mobile chip technology. CEO Lei Jun revealed via Weibo that the company has invested 13.5 billion yuan (approx. $1.87 billion) in developing the Xring O1, its advanced mobile processor. The firm plans to invest an additional 50 billion yuan over the next decade in chip design, starting from 2025.

Xiaomi’s chip journey began in 2014, leading to the launch of the Pengpai S1 processor in 2017. Although initial efforts were met with setbacks, the company shifted its focus to simpler chips like image and battery management processors. However, Xiaomi renewed its commitment to mobile chip development in 2021, coinciding with its entry into the electric vehicle industry.

“Xiaomi has always had a chip dream. To become a world-class hard tech company, chips are a peak we must conquer,” Lei Jun said. “We will definitely go all out.”

Smartphone Ecosystem: Xiaomi 15S Pro Also Coming

Xiaomi will also unveil the Xiaomi 15S Pro, part of its strategy to build a seamless ecosystem of smartphones, appliances, and now electric vehicles—all tightly integrated through proprietary chips like the Xring O1. This strategy is aligned with industry trends, where rivals such as Apple and Huawei are leveraging in-house chipsets to enhance device integration and user experience.
